What is Botox/Dysport?

Our skin will furrow and fold between the brows due to muscle contraction when you frown or concentrate. Similarly, when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Injecting Botox/Dysport into this area will weaken these muscles causing temporary improvements or disappearance of the existing lines. The FDA has approved Botox/Dysport to be used to improve the appearance of the vertical lines between the brows. Similarly crow’s feet and horizontal forehead lines can also be improved by the injection of Botox/Dysport into these areas. Lines at present rest may or may not improve.

How does it work?

When a small amount of purified Botox/Dysport protein is injected into a muscle it causes weakness of that muscle. This typically appears in 5-7 days and usually lasts 3-4 months (but can be shorter as each person will vary).

What are the side effects and risks?

Side effects and complications are minimal. Occasionally, slight swelling, numbness and/or bruising may last several days after the injection. Some may experience a transient headache at injection site. Rarely, an adjacent muscle may be weakened and cause a temporary droop of the eyelids. Other side effects may include respiratory infection, flu syndrome and nausea. A long term safety review of patients using Botox which totaled 853 treatment sessions noted only 9 events of side effects which were minimal and transient. In very small numbers of individuals the injection did not work as satisfactorily or for as long.

What is Juvederm?

JUVÉDERM® XC is the first and only non-surgical hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA-approved to instantly smooth moderate to severe wrinkles around your nose and mouth for up to one year with optimal treatment.

As you age, it’s not just about lines and wrinkles. Your cheeks can lose volume and skin may begin to sag. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel to instantly add volume to your cheek area to correct age-related volume loss in adults over the age of 21. It can provide you contour and a subtle lift for up to two years with optimal treatment.

What are the side effects and risks?

For JUVÉDERM® XC, most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and last 7 days or less. The most common side effects include temporary injection-site reactions such as: redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin-injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

What is Juvederm Voluma?

As we all know, the fine lines and wrinkles come as you age. Most of us don’t think about the loss of volume in our cheeks and sagging skin that accompanies! JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel to instantly add volume to your cheek area to correct age-related volume loss in adults over the age of 21. Like Juvederm, Voluma is a hyaluronic acid based filler, but in a more dense form. This provides the substantial lift and volume needed to replace the vanishing cheekbones.

How does it work?

Voluma gives a very natural and refreshed look to an aging face with volume loss and wrinkles or folds due to sagging. We are not simply “filling in” the folds… With Voluma, we are replacing the lost volume in the cheekbone, which in turn lifts the cheek and smooths out the sagging skin. This makes the lines less apparent without leaving an “over-filled” look around the mouth. Due to Voluma’s cross-linked structure, the product is long-lasting, providing results for up to 24 months.

What are the side effects and risks?

For JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, side effects are moderate (uncomfortable), and generally last 2 to 4 weeks. The most common side effects include temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching. As with all skin-injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

What are these?

Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, and Belotero are all sterile gels consisting of stabilized hyaluronic acid used to treat facial wrinkles and lines as well as lips for augmentation. All have been approved by the FDA for correction of facial wrinkles in the nasolobial area (“on-label” use), the fold between the cheek and the nose/upper lip.

What are the side effects and risks?

Side effects include but are not limited to: potential allergic reaction or injection site reactions (a lumpy or “thick” feeling at or just under the skin, bruising, redness, itching, pain, tenderness, or slight swelling). Injections into the lip area could trigger a recurrence of facial cold sores (Herpes simplex infections) for patients with a history of prior cold sores.
